These are the stitch patterns you can do with just simple knit and purl. Of course there are more than the patterns here, probably 200 – 300 patterns out there. XD
Garter Stitch
Both side of garter stitch is ~ pattern. It’s a bit thicker than stockinette stitch.
Cast on any numbers of stitches, knit or purl all the stitches. Turn the needle around, knit or purl all the stitches again.
Stockinette Stitch
Front side is V pattern and back is ~ pattern. The concept of stockinette stitch is putting all knit stitch on the front side, and purl stitch on the back side (while reverse stockinette stitch is the opposite). This stitch will curl naturally because of the knit stitch is slightly shorter than the purl stitch according to knitting.about.com.
Cast on any numbers of stitches, knit 1 row, turn the needle around and purl 1 row. Turn the needle again to repeat knit 1 row and purl 1 row.
If you lost track, try checking the knot. If the knot is facing you, then it’s the purl stitch. If the knot is at the back, it’s the knit stitch.
Ribbing
Ribbing is combining knit and purl stitch. It is more stretchable than the previous patterns. It will become shorter compare with using other patterns, because it’s wavy.
Vertical
Cast on number of stitches you calculated, purl 4 stitches and knit 2 stitches and repeat in a row. You can try out other possibilities also, for example knit 2 purl 8. Turn the needle around, follow the stitches. Purl if it’s purl stitch, knit if it’s knit stitch.
Horizontal
Cast on any numbers of stitches, knit 2 rows and purl 2 rows. Repeat again. Use your creativity.
Cord / i-cord
Cord is a knitted string. It can be used on bags, hat, and also as decoration on anything. It’s best to use two size smaller of yarn/wool of your main object.
Using double-pointed needle, cast on number of stitches you need, knit all stitches, push to another end of the needle (DO NOT TURN THE NEEDLE), and continue knit again, tightly.
