“布与毛线的可爱小物” in English is “Cute stuff with fabric and yarn”. This book containing most of the patterns combining fabric and yarn is written by 川路ゆみこ (Kawaji Yumiko). It was translated from Japanese to Chinese. It has over 30 patterns divided into categories. All the pages of the book is colored. Just simply flip through the book for the pattern you like, get the page no of the pattern, do it! Very easy to navigate throughout the book.

My first Mandarin crochet book. The title said “Finish crochet bags, scarfs or accessories in 1 day” and the amigurumi at the front page are very attracting me. These project patterns are written by 2 Japanese designers then translated into Mandarin.

The pictures inside this book is very sharp. Some of the works are even photographed with a model. This would be easy for us to imagine the correct size of the final product.

All the projects are shown at first before the diagrams. Search for the number of the project you want to do at the back for the diagrams / charts.

The diagrams and charts are easy to follow, even for a beginner. Every projects in this book are using Hamanaka yarn. There’s also illustrated basic crochet techniques at the back for learning.

I would recommend this to a crochet beginner who knows Mandarin.

Kait Jarum Dua is written by Zainon Mohd Nor Al-Yunani. The knowledge of knitting is written in Bahasa Melayu for the first time. There is some tips at the beginning as text, not really informative and not really attracted to look at.

Illustrated techniques in teaching how to knit. But since this is the first time I read a BM knitting book, I have to adjust myself to understand the different abbreviations. For example :

M.K. (Mata Kaitan) = Stitches
A.K. (Awan Ketumbar) = Stockinette Stitch
K. (Ketumbar) = Knit
A.J. (Awan Jagung) = Garter Stitch
J. (Jagung) = Purl

After understand the Malay version of abbreviations, now you can start your projects. 50% of the projects in this book are for babies. The projects are easy as they only use the basic stitches, knit and purl. And there’s still description of the abbreviation in every single project.

There’s 8 “Bunga Kaitan” (Stitch pattern) at the back. Including ribs, laces and checkered pattern. A full page of the image of pattern on the left side will be helpful for you to check stitch counts.

This shouldn’t be your first book of knitting if you want to have more choices of project patterns. It would be easier if you learn knitting abbreviation in English at first. Less confusing.

Well, this book is published in 1989, so don’t blame the patterns are outdated. The knitting knowledge in this book is much extensive than others that I’ve seen so far. (Hint: it has the curve shapes session)

This book is written by Ruth Maria Swepson, a well-known knitwear designer who is both a teacher and a regular contributor to the leading knitwear magazines. This book has a lot stitch patterns. Some of them are classics.

Diagrams and graphs are provided for easy knitting. But in my opinion, the patterns are really outdated for my age. I don’t mind purchase this book for just the teaching part as it’s much fuller than other books and its price.

I was trying to find another book which has a lot of patterns in MPH, The Curve. After failing to find it, I headed to Borders to continue my search where I found this.

“200 Knitting Tips, Techniques & Trade Secrets” is written by Betty Barnden.

This book contains over 200 professional fixes, insider tips, and secrets arranged by topic to enable any crafter to achieve a great fit and finish when knitting garments and accessories. You will also learn how to dye yarns easily in an ordinary kitchen..

It covers not only the basic and advanced techniques, but also from choosing yarn to designing, dyeing and also aftercare. You can look for help on almost any of the troubles faced when you are knitting. In my opinion, it is much more useful than the information found on the internet.

The book contains 160 full color pages. All the basic, advanced and creative techniques are illustrated step by step for ease of understanding. Common abbreviations of knitting are located on the last page of the book. You will need this when reading knitting patterns as they use abbreviations.

If you’re already a professional knitter and are looking for knitting projects / patterns, this is not the book you’re looking for. But for beginners and intermediate knitters, this book is very useful and a good way to start exploring the beautiful world of knitting.

This is my first knitting book. It comes together with a CD which has tutorials on advanced knitting techniques. Before I bought this book, I was wandering around IOI Mall looking for the knitting which shop I went to a few years ago, but to no avail. Sad

It is written entirely in Chinese by Ann Chen. She used to be an athlete, but now she has become a host for several TV shows. Although she is very skilled in making soap by hand, but she still managed to write 2 knitting books. I bought her second knitting book which focuses more on advanced projects because I can learn the basic knitting techniques via the internet (VideoJug is a great source for videos to watch and learn).

The projects are categorized by the difficulty level. It includes a lot useful projects (which you can use after finishing it) like hats, socks, gloves, mini pillow covers, scarves, laces and snowballs. Besides that, there are some basic knitting techniques tutorials located at the back of the book.

I would recommend this book for beginners who have already learnt the basic knitting techniques and are ready to proceed onto more complicated projects. The provided CD is very helpful if you have difficulty in understanding the text and images in the book. I chose this book over another English knitting book which has more information on knitting patterns because I couldn’t afford the English one.
